Steps in the Construction of a Presentation/Pill Box
I thought it would be nice to upload the steps of construction of a nice presentation/pill box. I hope you enjoy it and maybe learn a bit about my fabrication process.
These are the materials I will be using to make the box. Flat sterling silver stock, tubing and wire for the hinge, and fine silver bezel stock. I will be choosing the stone later, at this point I am not sure what stone will work best with the box.
The first step is scribing out lines for sawing the sides of the box.
Next sawing along the scribe line, sorry about the Bose plug, that is my quenching bowl.
Here it is sawed, it still needs to be filed and sanded straight.
I repeat this for the other two sides.
Next I use a miter jig to saw the two pieces to make nice 45° angles.
Here you go nice 45° cuts to form the corners. One can also score, and file a 45° groove, and then bend the piece. I do this sometimes but if you want perfect corners I prefer cutting it all the through.
Now one solders the two pieces together.
Repeat for the other side. Now you have two and you have two L shaped pieces for the four sides.
Adjust the width and make sure everything is flush and ready for soldering. I like a bit of overhang so I can remove any solder that is not fully flowed.
Here it is soldered and ready to remove the excess metal.
Excess metal removed filed and sanded, a bit more than necessary but I did for the picture and documentation.
Time to solder the top of the box to the sides.
Here it is soldered
Time again to file and sand the excess off, here is the result.
Now I scribe a line to mark where I want to saw the top from the bottom.
Here is the scribe line.
Sawing, sawing more sawing, I don’t like this step I really should just use a cut off wheel. Ah done.
Now time to solder the bottom.
After removing the excess and filing and sanding you have TaDa a finished box.
Finished, ah not even close, now comes the hard parts. Oh the burn mark you see on my bench, that wasn’t me that was the dog, yea that is right the dog did it.
Time to apply a hinge to the box. I start out by making a straight u groove between the top and bottom pieces.
NOTE: Sorry I was so busy I forgot to take photos of some of the next steps, but this is kind of getting the old TLDR. I guess you are going to have to wait for my video, which is coming.
Hinge detail 2
Anyway back to the box construction. I basically cut three pieces of tubing and soldered one piece to the top and two to the bottom of the box.
Now to add a little bling, I found this reverse cut quartz, I thought it would look nice on the box.
I also picked out a scalloped bezel, and I cut out a nice oval base plate to match the stone.
Here is the bezel soldered to the base plate.
Now sweat soldered to the top of the box.
Now we are almost done, just setting the stone and filing down the hinge.
Nope not done yet, I kind of went crazy and with the finishing details. I burnished the whole box except for the bottom with a scribe to give it some texture and still retain a nice smooth surface.
Here are some pictures, they are not the best of quality but I hope you can see how nice this box turned out.
